Bubble Nebula

180 x 90 cm (museum-quality aluminum print, Diasec)

Located in the constellation Cassiopeia at a distance of approximately 7,500 light-years is a star about forty times more massive than our Sun, which has blown a bubble of gas around itself. The gas expands outward from the star at a speed of over 6.5 million kilometers per hour. The star's intense ultraviolet radiation causes the surrounding gas clouds to become ionized and to glow at wavelengths characteristic of each element.

The bubble itself, expanding within a much larger cloud of hydrogen gas, is the result of a shock wave created by the star's rapid stellar wind colliding with the surrounding material. The end result is a remarkably striking structure in our sky.
