Photographed in February 2015, IC 405, the Flaming Star Nebula. On this occasion, the reflection nebula component was also captured using a blue filter, appearing in the images as a bluish region slightly to the right of center. The emission nebula IC 405 is located in the constellation Auriga at a distance of approximately 1,500 light-years.
The image covers an area of about four square degrees of sky, meaning that two full Moons would fit within the frame side by side and overlapping. This is a gas cloud that emits light on its own—an emission nebula. The intense red color originates from light emitted by ionized hydrogen (H-alpha).
The shapes of the gas cloud are shaped by the stellar winds and radiation pressure of massive stars. The same radiation ionizes the gas, causing it to glow. Captured from Oulu in 2015 using a 25 cm reflector telescope, with a total exposure time of approximately 14 hours.
