PuWe 1 is one of the largest and faintest known planetary nebulae. The nebula formed when a red giant star, in the final stage of its life, expelled its outer layers into space. The gas glows because it is energized by the remnant core of the star, a white dwarf. PuWe 1 is, however, exceptionally faint precisely because of its large size. As planetary nebulae expand, they fade, because the gas moves farther and farther away from the energizing white dwarf. (Text source: NOIRLab)

I used a total of 36 hours and 20 minutes of exposure time to photograph this cosmic smoke ring, using narrowband filters H-alpha, S-II, and O-III. PuWe 1 is located in the constellation Lynx at a distance of approximately 1,300 light-years.
