Simeis 147 (Sharpless 240) is a large supernova remnant in the constellation Taurus. The object is extremely faint and has an apparent diameter of about three degrees. (The apparent diameter of the full Moon is half a degree, meaning that approximately eight full Moons would fit side by side within the area shown.)
The remnant has a true physical diameter of approximately 160 light-years and is located at a distance of about 3,000 light-years. Within the network of gas filaments left behind by the supernova explosion, ionized hydrogen glows red, while regions of ionized oxygen appear in bluish tones. The image was captured using a 300 mm camera lens and narrowband filters, with a total exposure time of approximately 18 hours.
